Implementation Methods

We have implemented solutions in many different environments at many different companies. This experience allows us to recommend the following major topics that you will encounter when considering ECAD to PLM implementation. The major topics of work you can see on the right side of any of the pages you visit here; Data Vaulting, Data Collaboration, Change Tracking, ECAD/MCAD Collaboration. Additionally we have seen the following topics discussed as a part of a full implementation.

Automated BOM Creation
Data Visualizaion
Data Comparison / Collaboration
Library Management & Integration
Legacy Data Loading
Customizations

Automated BOM Creation: Typically regarded as a primary objective in the implementation of the system. Automatic BOM generation is a key requirement in the PLM system. It enables “Where Used” functionality as well as removes the manual activity of BOM creation. Understanding this topic will be key to a discussion of the follow on discussions around Library Management.

Data Visualization: Upon implementation of the standard Data Vaulting activity you will be presented with optional creation of “lightweight viewable” file creation. This allows all users downstream of the Design Activity to access Schematics and PCBs through the PLM system.

Data Comparison / Collaboration: When viewables are available, they can be leveraged in several ways. Compare tools are available to all WindChill users. All of the elements of a PCB design are available for comparison; from copper and silk screen differences to part attribute differences. Typically redline markups can be created and stored on the viewables. This provides tracking and recording of recommended or required changes to the datasets. Imagine walking into a design review where all participants have recorded questions or requested changes prior to the review. Time in the review is then spent discussing the merits of the changes instead of what to change.

Library Management & Integration: A common topic for discussion. We typically regard this as a “top of the pyramid” activity. Recommended for implementation after the system is in place and established with regard to Vaulting and Collaboration. Typically requires one or more forms of customization. Please contact us to discuss in more detail.

Legacy Data Loading: Simply, bulk loading of all datasets that you would like to be managed in the PLM system.

Customizations: The Workgroup manager has the capability to automatically launch scripts you are already using in the every day activities of your ECAD design. Additionally ties between ECAD Libraries and WindChill will require some form of customization. Please contact us to discuss in more detail.

We can assist your teams in several ways. Consider us as experts in providing knowledge transfer to your Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) on site. If you require assistance in training or staff augmentation while your Engineers and designers ramp up on the new processes, we will be happy to assist. Even if you simply would like to discuss details on process changes, implementation strategies, or need a demonstration for your upper management, let us know.

We recommend that a phased approach be used for any standard implementation of your ECAD data into your PLM system.

Each of the concepts shown here can be delivered in a standardized fixed format. Using this fixed format will require your teams’ adoption of the new process and structure be implemented. Implementation in a format consistent with your existing work structure is possible, but by it’s nature, requires a time and materials implementation. Generally, it is required that lower level, “bottom of the pyramid” activities be completed prior to higher-level activities.
